Round trip in Crete – Description
Day 1: Arrival in Heraklion. Transfer to the Hotel and leisure time.
Day 2: Gortys – Phaestos – Matala
Breakfast and full day excursion to Gortys, Phaestos and Matala. The bus will first go to the South of the Island, where the area Messara is situated. This area is famous for its richness in fruits and vegetables. Continuing the theme of the magnificent legacy of the Minoans, we visit the Palace of Phaistos, Gortys a classical and Roman city complements of the historical story whilst a swim at Matala completes the day.
Day 3: Lassithi – Spinalonga
Today we will start our day with an excursion to the plateua of Lassithi, the monastery of Kera, and at the cave of Psychro. It is probably the most famous cave of Crete and together with the well-known windmills, are the main attraction in the area of Lassithi. Here the myth says that the father of the gods – the great Zeus – was born. We continue our tour, passing the village of Mohos. We’ll stop to make pictures of the fantastic panoramic view down to the blue sea. Next stop is the lovely town of Agios Nikolaos with the possibility to have a stroll in the center and a lunch break. Afterwards we drive to Elounda, from where a ferry boat will bring us to the Island of Spinalonga. Sightseeing and return.
Day 4: Traditional Crete
Today the group will have lunch in the hotel instead of dinner. The afternoon we will do an excursion to the traditional Crete: First we see how the Cretan wine is produced and of course everybody can also taste it. We invite you also to try the famous Cretan drink “Raki”, made out of grapes. Main attraction at the end of this day will be a Cretan Evening in a typical tavern at the village of Anopoli, where Cretan dancers in traditional costumes will be dancing for you.
Day 5: Knossos – Archeological Museum Heraklion
Excursion to Knossos – the former palace of the King Minos. Afterwards visit of the archeological Museum of Heraklion. Afterwards you can walk in Heraklion or make a little shopping-tour in the capital of Crete.
Day 6: East Crete
First stop today is the little town of Sitia. Afterwards we drive through a wonderful landscape to the very East of Crete. Here you find one of the nicest palm beaches of Europe. The monastery of Toplou is one of the most impressive of the historic monasteries of Crete. It is built on a dry and rocky plateau and continues to be a live monastery and the guardian of the orthodox traditions. The massive fortress protected the monastery during the Middle Ages, when it had experienced the scourge of the pirate raids and had been plundered mercilessly.
Day 7: West Crete
The monastery of Arkadi was built in the 16th century by a byzantine emperor and suffered many destructions during the Cretan revolutions. The next stop will be Rethymno – a small and old town. It flourished during the Venetian occupation when literature and arts were particularly developed. As it stands today it is one of the most picturesque Greek towns with remnants from both Venetian and Turkish periods. Last visit today is Chania: narrow streets, old Venetian houses, fountains and gardens full of flowers give the town a characteristic local color not to be found anywhere else in Crete and Greece.
Day 8: Breakfast, Transfer to the airport, departure.
